History
In the Spring of 1978, businessman Louis Kane was strolling through Boston’s
historic Faneuil Hall Marketplace when he came across a display showcasing a
new line of French bakery ovens. The aroma and quality of the fresh breads was
enchanting. So enchanting in fact, it gave Louis an idea. Why not make wonderful
fresh baked breads and croissants easily available to everyone in the city?
From this chance encounter came the first ever Au Bon Pain. And today, there
are over 226 Au Bon Pain cafés throughout the world, including Kuwait,
Dubai, Japan, Thailand, South Korea, and Taiwan.
Twenty-seven years later, a brand new Au Bon Pain was born. In July of 2005, a number of veteran employees completed a management buyout for 75% ownership of the entire Au Bon Pain Corporation. And with it came a bold new direction and a thrilling new future for our company. A Beyond The Ordinary future.

New Suburban Cafe Concept
Suburban guests are looking for a relaxing place to enjoy a great lunch
or dinner. While the urban Au Bon Pain provides great food, it is more
of a breakfast and lunch café and the café design is built more for the
on-the-go guest.
The new café, called The Bistro, Au Bon Pain, has a larger, more comfortable seating area that invites guests to stay and relax. The menu uses the urban Au Bon Pain as a starting point but then adds a full range of pasta dishes and Pizzettas to provide great dinner options. It has a full breakfast menu and some tasty options for kids so the whole family can enjoy a visit.
